Mat Workout - Amy uses small hand weights for most of today's Mat class and discusses the opportunity to be able to understand how to hold and use the weights to your advantage rather than to stress or strain the neck. If we can sense the weight of the hand weights underneath and below our shoulder blades/in our latissimus dorsi, shoulder girdle and muscles in our mid-back, these areas can be the counterweights to our arm movements, thereby freeing up our neck and shoulders to have more range of motion and power for movement. She gives a nice abdominal warm-up, blends some traditional Mat exercises like The 100 and Double Leg Stretch as well as some pieces from the Reformer like Rowing Back 1, Rowing Front 1, Draw a Sword, Reaching Up (done from a sitting position) and Kneeling Arm Overhead. Prone, she gives you Flight, T-Press and some nice variations of uni-lateral movements instead of Swimming. Try adding the use of light hand weights to some other Mat classes for added challenge and variety. Enjoy! (Filmed January 21, 2011)

I didn't have any hand weights handy, so did the class without them. It was challenging enough! Some great ideas for my ladies. Thanks again, Amy.

Hi Claire, great idea to just do the exercises solo! I'll try to remember to mention that next time----an alternate might be two small bottles of bottled water even. I'm glad the exercises challenged you and gave you some good ideas for your ladies. Let me know how they liked them. Talk again soon!

Hi Kelly! Thank you so much.....! I enjoy utilizing the hand weights from time to time and bringing in some Reformer movements/exercises into a Mat class. It keeps things interesting, challenging and familiar to those who have Reformer knowledge. Glad you enjoyed class...and thanks for taking class. Talk to you again soon!
