Anyone have any suggested therapy for Piriformis syndrome? Seem to likely have Sciatic nerve running through piriformis and am having an awful bout. Working at appropriate stretch and using roller but no luck. Would appreciate any help - am in pain!!! 14 mins ago
Hi I have had this too. Sorry to say there is no immediate cure. I limited my exercise to lengthening and internal rotation of the hips. No external rotation. Keep going with the roller but be gentle so take some body weight on your hands too. Also lots of roll ups/downs as it could be that your sacrum or lumber spine is out of whack, so a realignment workout is good. It took me about a month for the pain to subside and it is a pest as when relaxing I have to really pay attention to how I sit. Good luck.
You could try using a pinky ball as a massage tool. Laying on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor, place the pinky ball (a tennis ball sized pink ball) into the Meaty part of your butt and gently move around to find the place that feels "right". There might be a general area you find relief. Wiggle around slowly and gently and explore. You can also support the knee with pillows as you allow it to fall out to the side, (keep foot on floor). This allows you to get deeper. I find using this ball much more effective than a roller for releasing this area.
Hello...I have been having an issue with sciatic pain also and its causing pin and needles in both feet. releasing through the piriformis with a spikey ball has helped alot and making sure my pelvis is properly aligned. I'm wondering if any of you more recently have discovered, did you find any exercises in particular that helped with your Sciatic issues? I would so appreciate any suggestions. thanks so much.
I have had really great results using fascia release via the work of Jill Miller. Her book, THE ROLL MODEL, has become a great asset to my Pilates teaching, especially in clients needing corrective movement. I had terrible sciatica issues a few years ago and Miller's program really changed my life. I am 57 and know I will use this in addition to Pilates for the rest of my life. If you try it, let us know how it works for you.
