my client is 5 weeks after a laparoscopy-her ovaries and tubes were removed for preventive reasons due to her family history of cancer. her doctor said she can return to regular activity. any advice about how and when to safely return her to pilates. she has been coming to me once a week for a level 2 mat class for years.
Hi Susan, anytime my clients have had surgery I always made sure to get a medical release from the doctor stating pilates activity is ok to resume.. Some doctors don't really know what Pilates is so I have faxed an information sheet explaining the flexion, extension and rotation exercises along with postural and abdominal work just to be clear. Most often the doctor faxes back the "go ahead" to resume. Once you get approval I would start slowly and pay attention to how she feels and follow up with her around 2 days after your class to see how she tolerated everything. Good luck!
