Elizabeth D  great question, I would absolutely substitute a floor lunge facing the foot bar (back foot on the carriage up against the shoulder rest) to build confidence with the movement, while accomplishing the same posterior chain focus. If client feels ready to progress to reverse lunges standing on the carriage facing back, I typically offer clients the option to keep finger tips on the short box, or use a gondola pole in one hand for balance.

Kate you’re not the first one to notice lol, hyperextension is something I’m still working on in my personal pilates practice even after 15 years. It’s so difficult to make self corrections without a mirror, that’s why we need awesome instructors!
