I've noticed that the left side of my abdominals is much weaker than my my right and of course my right is taking over. I recently had a hip arthroscopy on my left due to arthritis and a labral tear, how can I balance myself out? Thank you.
My response to this is that it is quite normal to have imbalances, we are spinning in the same manner as the planet we live on. That is to say that most people have rotation forces action on them not to mention compensatory patterns from life itself. I think your best bet to balance things out or at least prevent more of the situation, is to do Pilates with someone watching you to help line you up as evenly as possible. I also think your own awareness of sensation as you take classes is a big step towards understanding what needs more focus and attention. If you try to set yourself up evenly, the weaker side will be working harder to maintain the alignment, while the other comparatively "kicks back" for a change. Just my thoughts of the top of my head. I hope they help.
I have always found it helpful with any exercise if you know you are tight or weaker on one side, put your mind in that area and really connect with it! Harder than it sounds but helpful. Having a trained eye watch you move is best!
