re. converting a garage into a studio

Has anyone got experience of converting a double garage into a studio? I'm currently training as a mat instructor and I'd be keen to turn our garage - which is at the bottom of our garden and completely detached from our house - into a studio. What considerations would I need to take into account? Has anyone got experience of doing it who could offer me some wise words?!! At the moment our garage is doing nothing except housing a bit of junk and I'd like to utilise its space....many thanks in advance for any replies!
Are you on friendly terms with your neighbours? My husband and I converted our garage, which is attached to our house, into a studio but our next door neighbour complained to our local council and we had no choice but to close it down. We have now have to rent very expensive premises. You should check with your local authority first of all or at least liaise with any neighbours and hope they are on your side. Hope all goes well and you are successful.
You will want to check with both your homeowner's and professional liability insurance carriers to discuss how a home studio would effect both of those policies and what you will need to be sure that your space, equipment and general liability needs are covered. I would also recommend speaking with a lawyer or small business consultant regarding how you set up your business (llc vs. corp., etc). Finally, when it comes time for construction, developing a good relationship with your building inspector will help you get the most out of completing your renovations to code.
I had same prob with permits out where i live although my neighbors were ok with it..since i do not tie up anyones driveway..teaching one on one thought its easier.. mat classes will draw more than one client ..so look into that for sure. Also u may need to provide a bathroom of some sort? Changing area.. so think on that one as well..good luck to u!! We converted our utility room which is attached to our home into a studio but i did add a small bathroom.
