Hi, I am a Pilates teacher planning to undergo a cycle of fertility treatments (ICSI). I have looked for information on Pilates for fertility and found very little. Mostly I have read that Pilates is a no-go for fertility, because of the emphasis on core work (abs) and pelvic floor. This creates a dilema for me, as it is my job. I also went on a retreat run by acupuncturists and a yoga teacher who advised me against doing any kind of rectus abdominus work during certain parts of my cycle. I don't know, I just get the idea that people aren't really informed of what Pilates is, and what the real effects of this work is on the reproductive system. Any insight would be appreciated.
Very interesting question! I'm sorry I don't have the answer. However, my chiropractor performs vascular mobilisations and stretching and advises me against the roll up and abdominal "crunching" as it can shorten the bladder, which was contributing to my hip pain. I imagine that certain movements designed to de-pressurize and lengthen area surrounding the ovaries could only help. Things to consider- what muscles pass directly around the reproductive organs? Is there any tightness/ disfunction in these muscles with your posture? On a side note, in acupuncture, chinese medicine and kinesiology, it is taught that female reproductive issues are connected to the kidney and bladder meridian. Kidney meridian includes the muscle psoas and upper traps, and bladder meridian includes gluteus medius and piriformis. It could well be worth checking the function of these muscles also for overactivity or underactivity...just a thought! Hope this helps!
