extreme inflexibility

A member of my cycling group asked me to help her become more flexible. I am a pilates teacher with 12 years exerience and I have never had anyone as a client who is so extremely tight. This woman is a very powerful cyclist and skier. Everything I try with her ends up in pain. Does anyone have an idea of where to start?
I suspect some of the answer lies in what drives her to be so powerful (attitude, personality, perceptions). I would look at the intensity with which she approaches the exercises you give her. If it mirrors the intensity of her sports, I would try to help her find ease in the work while gradually facilitating larger ranges of motion. Good luck!
Great idea, Kristi, thanks!
