While I applaud your site for representing the many styles of Pilates equally, as a classically trained instructor, teaching for 13 years, I think that safety is overlooked on some of the videos.
Hi Lee, as one of the founding regular teachers on the site I value feedback from our members and audience highly. Can you be more specific on your comment and/or site any specific classes/videos that you might see safety as a concern? We respect the Pilates work, technique, industry and evolution of this profession highly and strive to produce the highest quality teaching and classes possible. Safety IS incredibly important to us so please, we'd like to know so that we can make changes and/or adaptations when necessary. Thank you for mentioning this.
Hi Amy: I was referring to a class where the instructor (not a regular, by the way) was teaching front splits..she put heels against shoulder blocks and lunged her front leg onto the footbar.. to me this is not the safest way to teach this, without a caveat to include the safety concerns for short people or those with limited ROM in a forward lunge.... Because these videos reach so many folks, and some are using reformers where the footbar is not secured, (Peak, for instance) as well as having the carriage move while trying to get that front leg onto the foot bar. I actually do it that way myself, but I know what I am doing...some of your viewers do not. But I do think that your site provides wonderful instruction..
BTW Amy: I usually have my clients stand at the front of carriage, put foot on footbar, and then heeltoe back to the shoulder block: just an option that should be mentioned.
Gosh I sound like a cranky complainer, but the other video, was same instructor teaching rolling like a ball on the long box, on reformer. The person doing the workout almost rolled off, and she was an instructor! This was really a no-no in a class, especially a video. Advancement is through deepening the work, not trying to look like a Circ du Solie performer
Thank you Lee for furthering your example of safety concern. I will pass this along, absolutely. I agree, these classes and videos are reaching many, many people and some who may not be as familiar with all parts of the work----safety being high on that list. I very much appreciate you bringing this up because part of the discipline of Pilates is the safety on the equipment....it's part of the practice. I was taught to think of the equipment as my 'dance partner'...never wanting to put either it or myself in harms way. Sometimes creativity in developing new exercises can cross this boundary and needs to be considered. Again, thank you.
