You can now jump around in videos

Ted Johnson
Today, we launched some new video serving technology that allows you to jump ahead or back to any place in the video without first waiting for the entire movie to download. So, if you want to start watching something 30 minutes in, you can.

In addition to this, the new technology is also served from a greater number of servers around the world which should hopefully give better playback in general, especially for those outside of the USA.
Thank God for this new feature!
Hi Ted - I'm wondering if your new video technology has stopped the download-ability of your videos? I have (gasp!) dial up at home, so i had until recently been downloading the classes at my office where we have dsl, and then playing them back at home on my laptop. Something has changed and I cannot do that anymore. Any tips? thanks! Alison

Hi Alison,

Do you mean to say you were pressing pause, and waiting for the video to fill up, when you say you were downloading them? I am afraid to say that technique will probably not work any more with the streaming video technology.

We are working on a solution for our extreme low bandwidth or no-bandwidth members.
Hi Ted - thanks...I actually was downloading the entire stream as you might download a youtube video (even if I waited for the video to load on high speed, then went home, that would not work). Glad to hear you may have a solution for us with the rural heavy 'pine-tree tax'. Laggy speed expensive, satellite is our best option here, sadly. Will check back in re updates...
thanks again, Alison

Alison,

The only way I can think of for you to do what you want to right now is to use the mobile site. Do you have an iPad or an iPhone by any chance? Those platforms would let you download the videos the way you're describing.

We will be working on a solution for you as well, just trying to think of something that could work for you right now.
Will this new downloading technology work with wireless? I've tried watching the videos on wireless and it doesn't work.
Ted Johnson
Do you mean wireless phones, Christine? The videos works great on the iPhone, we actually have a special mobile phone version of the site for this. You do need a good 3G connection.
Hi Ted,
Do you know how much bandwidth a 1 hour class uses on the mobile site via a 3G connection?
Ted Johnson
Chanda, it would be about 300 kbits per second of bandwidth.
