Thanks Amy. Love the rice bag as a 'visual'. Nice to be reminded about the importance of breathing!!
Love!!! Thanks for sharing! Teaching breathe and abdominal control is my favorite part of Pilates. Will definitely take some cues and pointers. ( Rice bag is probably better than a 3lb weight) Thank you.

Thanks ladies! These podcasts are brief reminders, sharing just a few tips and pointers to these varied themes. As we know, there are many, many ways to teach breathing and abdominal control. Hope these were some that inspired you.

Hi
I have a first time client experience pain on her right rib the morning after doing lateral breathing for the first time ever. Is this normal? She was very tight and stiff all over.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi Lourdes K — Natalia from the Pilates Anytime team here — I am also a certified instructor! 👍

Pairing the breath with the tempo of the movement itself is a great way to help clients incorporate Pilates breathing with their exercises.

For example, when doing leg and footwork you may want to instruct clients do the exhale on the effort of the movement [pressing out]. When the client has reached full extension through the body, that’s when the exhale should complete, and you can then time the inhale to the speed of the return back in towards the footbar.

Also ensuring that clients are breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth is imperative to ensuring the cycle of oxygen through the body. I personally like to describe a Pilates exhale as a combination between blowing out birthday candles and shushing someone in a library.

Breath work takes time and lots of practice to master, but hopefully the above tips will help your clients gain some additional confidence!
