Hi Theresa C -- Natalia from the Pilates Anytime Team here! I am also a certified Instructor!

When it comes to the breath, you will hear a variety of different cues which may depend on the Instructors training background. So in short, "inhale back" and "exhale back" are both correct cues.

In the case of this particular class, the directional "back" cue may refer to using the inhale or exhale to help you return to the starting position of the exercise. This encourages the student to breathe the movement to ensure optimal coordination throughout the exercise.

We hope this provides some additional clarity to cueing! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to us at support@pilatesanytime.com

Theresa C thank you for your comment! The training I received, originating from Joseph Pilates, taught to his students including Ron Fletcher and Romana Kryzanowska, who taught the original Method of Contrology to my mother, Diane Diefenderfer, was passed along to me with this breath pattern - inhale on the extension as you press the carriage out during leg and footwork, exhale to return the carriage back home to the stopper. I like to think of breathing with the springs; when you inhale the lungs and the springs expand, when you exhale they close. This isn't true for all exercises, but it is for many. This was the original breath pattern taught by Joe and I continue to share the importance of the breath with my clients and in my own practice. I hope you find this helpful and continue to breathe! :)
