Charise ... I understand what you're feeling here and I too sometimes feel those superficial muscles more than the deep abdominals. My thoughts are... to possibly slow it down and go at your own pace, wiggle the legs a little bit to somewhat distract those bigger muscles and concentrate on those behind and inside. It may take time....I know it has for me. But also know, that those other muscles are important too...and possibly, just possibly, they may need some attention as well. :)
Your careful attention to what we are looking to feel in each exercise and those well timed reminders to focus on our abs are lessons that we can take with us to any and ALL classes we take!

Well, Amy Havens the dog(s) ate my real ball, so I had to get creative with the Fitball Seating Disc and the Magic Circle; not sure if that made it harder, but I surely worked deep on all levels. Thank you - I am so glad I signed up for this!
