Dear Jamie, what a great question about whether Pilates can work for various back pathologies. When we understand where the restrictions of movement come from, we are much more capable of dealing with pathology. I believe it is the Pilates teacher's responsibility to understand where movement comes from, which can take years of study before one really understands and can see these restrictions.
Brent, this class was so comprehensive and so informative. As a PT I so appreciate the connection of the regular Pilates repretoire to the kinematics of the body and how to use it to a patient/client's advantage for pathologies. As a Pilates instructor I absolutely love the creativity.in the exercises and the use of the reformer. Will watch this many times again!Thank you!!! Sandy
i would love to see the "typewriter" from another angle, top or bottom of the reformer. A lot of interesting work here that would benefit from a 2nd viewpoint. Please bring Brent back for more classes/workshops!
Gaynor I appreciate your comment here. We need to get Brent back here for a hundred different reasons, and seeing more angles is just one of them. We learned so much from him this trip. Next time we will make sure we film him in the day so the window isn't black, the student doesn't wear black, he doesn't wear black and we will definitely have two camera angles one of them being close up. I know it can be maddening to get such good information from him, knowing you could glean just a bit more if we had these things sorted out ahead of time. The good news is he is more than willing to come back. At this point, it is a matter of scheduling it for him. Thanks again for your feedback.
This kind of work is so useful, even for those with healthy low backs and just occasional tightness. I really enjoyed Brent's commentary regarding many aspects of back health, e.g., the posterior rib action to mobize the thoracic spine, the bones being made to move us, avoiding over-recruitment of muscles. A gentle yet challenging set of movements. Thank you Brent and Kristi, can't wait to see more!
I just want to say my own thank you to Brent for this truly masterful class that helps us who are classically trained when confronted with someone who is practically immobile because of pain and tightness. Am working with a client right now who is really challenging me as a teacher, and I am going to use all these things with him. And I agree, a class on shoulders would be the bomb!!!!
